CAS 100
CAS 100 has proven to be a wonderful and enlightening experience. All throughout the semester, the work that occupied me was invested with an enriching and purposeful value. There were many aspects of the class that appealed to me on an intellectual and emotional level. For example, the course focus on speech delivery was particularly useful. I plan on being a writer of some capacity in the future, specifically of an academic/scholarly caste, thus learning the colorful nuances of language itself and how to truly apply it appropriately was of great personal value to me.
I also greatly benefited from the focus on utilizing research into specific topics. Becoming acquanted with scholarly modes of research, such as using search engines to find scholarly and peer-reviewed journals, taught me much that I will most certainly be using regularly if I do ever become an academic writer. University databases are an unequivocally invaluable source of research generation.
CAS 100 is a course that is devoted to multi-media forms of composition production. Here at the end of the semester, I can say that this aspect of the course was highly informative and useful in the long-term. The Internet and digital forms of media were all utilized. At first, being exposed to all these different forms of media all at once was somewhat daunting for me. I had never been exposed to so many different forms all at once in the same class, and I had never been required to produce text with all of them in a speaking class specifically. The E-Portfolio likewise filled me with apprehension, because I had never made one before. In fact, I never really knew what an E-Portfolio was before entering into this course. But I made one, I completed my assignment, and I learned how to use digital media. The experience will stay with me for use in the future, and for that I could not be more grateful.
Reflecting here on my overall performance in this semester as a sophomore, I can say that I am satisfied with the work that I put into the class, just as i am satisfied with what I got out of it. I fulfilled the requirements of the course contract, and attempted to devote myself on an even more significant level. There are of course areas where I believe my strengths were not fully utilized. For example, I am fairly old-fashioned when it comes to writing. A pen and paper are my tools of the trade. Word processor is okay by me too, for practical reasons, but nevertheless I'm still old-fashioned. Using many different forms of media was fun and creative in a spatial sense, but it is where I tend to fall into weakness. That is to say, my weakness I suppose is my steadfast and impeccable handling of the standard speech-format. Being so thoroghyly devoted to mastering this singular skill has stunted my growth in other creative areas, such as making podcasts and videos and powerpoints and websites. Another area I fell short in, though not literally, was my tendency to write too much and clutter my assignments with constellations of facts and scholarly sources; rather than keeping it short and simple, and including only a few principal sources.
I have provided here my Self-Assessment of my over-all performance of the class:
Performed learning activities or tasks, assignments, and
speeches on time (as per our
Scheduled Plan of Activities)
I
would rate myself a 5. All of my assignments were completed on time.
Executed effective communication, collaboration and/or
leadership skills
I would rate myself a 5. In all of my speeches,
I am confident that I was able to make profound connections with my audience,
capturing their attention and effectively articulating my messages across to
them. The mostly positive feedback that I received during the peer evaluations
attests to this. During our group projects, I was very effective in taking the
initiative to complete assignments, while simultaneously serving as a bridge
between group members for ideas to flow back and forth.
Rendered well-thought out speeches, reflections, and
work output
I would rate myself a 5. I’m very happy with
the speeches I delivered. In both my Informative and Persuasive speeches, I
presented facts with impeccable attention to the credibility of sources, and I
constructed arguments that followed clear and cogent lines of reasoning, all in
support of a message that had definite internal coherence. In my reflections, I
was as honest an objective as I could be; I really put a great deal of serious
thought into my own self-evaluations, and I also into evaluating the
contributions of my fellow peers. As far as my work output goes, I believe that
I have been reasonably prodigious in the scale and character of my work output.
Fulfilled the ethical requirements of public speaking
(AVOID: plagiarism, ethnocentrism, egocentrism, and commission of
fallacies)
I would rate myself a 5. I did not plagiarize,
I was not ethnocentric or racist, I took my whole audience into consideration
and not just myself, and I committed not fallacies, either in fact or in
reasoning.
Overcame speech anxiety or fear and other undesirable
communication habits
I would rate myself a 4. I was able to overcome
my anxiety and fear, so that I’m happy to say that I was confident and
comfortable 99 % of the time I was speaking. Nevertheless, there are areas for
improvement. One would be fillers; I still have to work on my “umms” and
“uhhs.” Also, I could rely less on my power point while speaking. That aside, I
would say I’m a 4.
Reflected well on your learning process and learning
accomplishments and be able to present valuable learning output or
accomplishments (PORTFOLIO Presentation)
I would rate myself a 5. My reflections were
honest and well-thought through, and they met all the necessary criteria. I was
able to cite specific examples of my accomplishments, thus attesting to my
successful learning output.
Maintained positive attitude, practiced positive core
values, and philosophy in life and show appreciation of the value of lessons
learned in this course to one’s personal, academic and professional
goals.
I would rate myself a 5. All throughout, I was
positive, I was true to my core values of honesty, confidence, and
determination; I always kept to heart my life philosophy of intellectual
integrity, and I directly applied the lessons I learned in class. This can been
seen in what I learned about the art of persuasion, such as the fact that 80 %
of convincing people relies on emotional appeals and that emphasis on the
beneficial aspects of one’s point of view is key in making a moral argument. I
applied both of these lessons in my own persuasive speech.
Applied the principles and techniques of effective
speech preparation and speech delivery as well as apply speech
evaluation skills (being able to assess the effectiveness of
one’s own speech delivery or performance and that of others)
I would rate myself a 5. My preparation was
modeled explicitly on the lessons learned in class and my subsequent deliveries
demonstrate this. My evaluations reflect the great emphasis I put on applying
the learned principles and techniques.
Nurtured and enriched communication potentials for
personal, academic and career success
I would rate myself a 5. I intend to become a
professional union organizer and labor activist, and therefore need to
cultivate great communication skills. What I accomplished in this class has set
me on the right path.
Communicated in a positive, ethical, respectful, and
professional manner
I would rate myself a 5. I was positive all
throughout, I followed every ethical guideline to the letter, I was respectful
of my fellow peers and instructor, and I conducted myself in a highly
professional manner.
Experienced success in this course as you effectively
utilized technology and other class resources we have. Give
3 to 5 words that best describe your learning Experience and success in class and explain or give reasons WHY?
I would rate myself a 5. I was able to
successfully employ both power point and weebly to my assignments
One word I would use to best describe my learning experience is
“enlightening.” It has opened up my mind to a whole plethora of knowledge about
the art of public speaking.
Another word I would use is “successful.” My experience has been one
of success in terms of applying what I’ve learned to my
assignments.
Another word is “fulfilling.” It’s been a great experience, one that
has conferred upon me valuable lessons that I will never forget and probably
use in the very near future.
I have also provided descriptions of my assignments over the course of CAS 100, as well as samplings of my actual work, as they appear via the links below.
I hope you enjoy reviewing them.
